Barcelona, September 21st. We were wrapping up the eighth Hive community meeting - a few days of talks, people, and the usual question of how to position a project the world still doesn't understand.

Between sessions I walk. Always have. Analogue camera in hand, no plan, just looking. It's how most of our ideas start - not in meetings, but on the pavement after them. This time the camera was a red Hanimex 35 HS. A $5 point-and-shoot from the 80s, loaded with 200 ISO colour negative.

I was halfway down Passeig de Gràcia when I walked straight into him. Lamine Yamal - arguably the most valuable football player in the world - standing outside a shop with a leopard-print bag on a chain. Ten seconds earlier, someone had taken the photo he'd post to 4.4 million likes.

The street moment, caught on a phone
The phone grab - the real street, everyone's reflex. The one he'd never post.

For someone who used to buy newspapers as a kid to build player statistics by hand, long before computers were a thing, the moment registered fast.

I had about fifteen seconds. The Hanimex was set to sun, 200 ISO. He was behind glass, indoors, probably three stops too dark. I raised the camera and pressed the shutter.

I asked the lab to push the roll +1. Every other frame on the roll would run a stop hot, but the only one that mattered was the one through the window.

Days later he left for international duty and scored in the 2nd minute against England, the 2nd minute against Croatia, and the 6th against Czechia. Three matches, three goals, all within moments of kickoff. It had never happened before in the history of the Spanish national team.

He needed 70 seconds.
I had 15.
